Add a Second Instagram Account on the Same Phone (2026)

TL;DR

Instagram only keeps you logged into one account at a time, and the phone can store login information for others. Add one from Profile, Menu, Login, Add account. A saved login can still ask for the password. Names appear on the login screen if you used them recently on that device, if they share an Accounts Center, or if an Android Google account is tied to them. Remove profiles from this device only takes the shortcut off the phone. It does not deactivate or delete the account. A brand-new username is a signup first, then an add. Business profiles cannot switch to private until they become personal accounts again.

Instagram lets the phone store login information for more than one account, and it only keeps you inside one of them at a time. Adding the second account saves a login. It does not create a folder inside the first profile. Each account still has its own username, its own posts, and its own privacy setting.

The Help Center is mid-rename. You may see Accounts Center, or you may see Meta Account settings, as the place where those settings live. The steps below use the labels on the current add-account article.

Add an account the phone does not have yet

This path is for an Instagram account that already exists.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Scroll to Login.
  4. Tap Add account.

Instagram then asks for that account's login. A saved login is meant to get you in with one tap, without retyping the email or phone and the password. The same article says you may still have to enter the password in some cases. Add account remembers the login. It does not retire the password.

You stay in one account after that. Opening the other one means leaving the one you are in. Instagram states the limit in one line: you can only be logged into a single Instagram account at a time. The rest sit on the device until you pick them.

Why a second name shows up before you add it

The login screen can list accounts you do not remember saving. Instagram gives three reasons:

  • The account was logged into recently on that same device.
  • The accounts sit in the same Accounts Center, and those accounts can log into each other.
  • You are on Android, logged into a Google account that is tied to a Facebook or Instagram account you have.

A shared phone, an old client login, or a Google account on Android can put a name on that list through one of those three. If the name is not yours, take it off before the phone goes back to someone else.

Take a saved login off the phone

Removing the shortcut does not close the Instagram account.

From the login screen in the app:

  1. Tap Options in the top right.
  2. Tap Remove profiles from this device.
  3. Tap Remove next to the account.

Instagram's note on that screen: removing login information only removes the account from the iPhone or Android device. It does not temporarily deactivate the account, and it does not permanently delete it. The profile still exists. You can add it again later with the username and password.

Not everyone can remove a profile from the login screen right now. The article says that while Meta moves people onto Meta Accounts. If Remove is missing, Log out is the other control on the same Login row. Open Menu, scroll to Login, and tap Log out. That drops the login for the account you are currently in. Add account stores a login. Log out takes the current one off the device.

A new brand account is a signup, then an add

Add account does not invent a username. A second brand, a client, or a personal profile that should not share the first username has to be created as its own Instagram account first. After that account exists, store it on the phone with the four taps above.

The email or phone at signup has to be one Instagram will accept for a new account. The Help Center keeps a separate article for the case where that login is already used by another Instagram account. If signup stops there, open that article. Typing the same address again does not create a second profile.

Which of the two can go private

Once both logins are on the phone, decide which one is allowed to stay public. Business profiles cannot turn on a private account. Instagram says that on the private-account page: switch the profile back to a personal account first if you need the private toggle.

That split is the usual reason a brand keeps two logins. The product profile stays public so strangers can find posts. The personal profile can require a follow request. They do not share a privacy switch. Changing one does not change the other.

People leaving the brand account is a separate screen from adding the login. How to see who unfollowed you covers that list. Reach on the public profile is a different job again, covered in why Instagram reach stalls.

Posts, Reels, and Stories stay on the account that made them

A Reel you publish while you are in the brand account lives on the brand account. Switching logins does not move it. The length rules travel with the Reel, not with the phone: how long Instagram Reels can be. A Story you reshare is the same. You are in one account when you repost, and the Story lands there. The menu for that is in how to repost an Instagram Story.

Check the profile picture in the bottom right before you post. That picture is the account you are in. The saved list on the login screen is only a list of doors. It is not a sign that you are inside all of them.

Ads on the brand login

The brand account is the one that should carry ads, product clips, and anything you want a stranger to find. A personal login with a private switch is a poor place for that, because a private account drops out of Explore and hashtag pages.

If the brand account needs talking-head video without a shoot, EzUGC turns a script into a UGC-style ad with AI actors. Plans start at $99 a month for up to 50 videos on the pricing page. You still add that brand as its own Instagram login. The ad file does not create the account.

Payouts are per account too. Whether Instagram pays a profile for views depends on that profile's eligibility, not on how many logins the phone remembers. The current rules are in does Instagram pay for views.

Before you export a Reel for the brand account, keep text and faces out of the UI chrome. The safe zone checker shows the area Instagram covers with buttons.

What to do when Add account asks for a password you do not have

A saved login can still demand the password. That is in the add-account article, and it is the point where a second account turns into a recovery. Use Forgot password on the login screen for that username, and send the link to the email or phone on that account. Do not reset the first account by mistake. The username you type is the account that gets the link.

If the email on the second account was changed and you have a message from [email protected], use the secure-my-account action in that message before you try Add account again. Mixing the two profiles up is the common failure on a shared phone: the reset lands on the personal login, and the brand login stays locked.

When both accounts are healthy, label them in the bios so the profile picture in the bottom right is obvious. The app does not stamp "you are in the brand" across the composer. The face or logo on that avatar is the check. Post a Story from the wrong login and it lives there. Switching afterward does not move it.
