TL;DR
Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot or screen-record a Story, feed post, Reel or regular DM. Disappearing photos and videos sent with View Once or Allow Replay now block screenshots in the app, and Vanish Mode chats can alert the sender if a capture is detected. A 2018 test of Story screenshot alerts ended within months. Close Friends, Hide story from, a private account and turning off sharing to messages shrink who can capture your Stories.
No. Instagram does not tell anyone when you screenshot or screen-record their Story, a feed post, a Reel or a regular DM. The one place it still matters is disappearing media in chats: View Once and Allow Replay photos and videos now block screenshots in the app, and Vanish Mode chats can flag a capture.
The part people do see is the view. When you open a Story, your name lands on the poster's viewer list, and Instagram's Help Center says so in plain terms. Screenshot or no screenshot, the poster knows you looked.
What Instagram notifies you about, by content type
Here is the short version for every format people ask about.
| What was captured | Does the sender or poster get notified? |
|---|---|
| Story (public, private account, or Close Friends) | No |
| Feed post or carousel | No |
| Reel | No |
| Regular DM text, photo or video | No |
| Screen recording of a Story, post or Reel | No |
| View Once or Allow Replay photo or video | Capture is blocked in the app; the sender's chat can still show a dotted circle if Instagram detects an attempt |
| Message in Vanish Mode | Yes, if Instagram detects the screenshot or recording |
Two caveats sit under that table. Instagram rolls changes out in waves, so an older app version or a different device can behave differently from your phone. And Vanish Mode may be unavailable in Japan and in European countries, according to Instagram's own Vanish Mode page.
Stories, feed posts and Reels
Instagram has never rolled out a screenshot alert for published Stories, posts or Reels. Android Authority and Business Insider's reference guide agree on this: the only screenshot signals live inside DMs.
Close Friends Stories follow the same rule. The green ring narrows the audience, and anyone inside it can still capture what they see.
Screen recordings follow the same rule. Recording a Story to save a recipe, a price or a product shot sends no signal to the poster.
The 2018 test that keeps coming back
The rumor has a real origin. In February 2018, TechCrunch reported that Instagram was testing a feature for a limited group of users: a camera-shutter icon appeared next to a viewer's name in the Story viewer list if they took a screenshot. Some testers also saw a pop-up warning before they captured anything. The Verge confirmed it on a staff account.
Instagram ended the test in June 2018. That is the whole history of Story screenshot alerts. Every guide that says Instagram notifies you today is repeating a test that lasted a few months and has been gone for eight years.
Disappearing photos and videos in DMs
This is the section where most online answers are out of date. Until late 2024, screenshotting a View Once photo told the sender. Then, on October 17, 2024, Instagram announced that it would stop people from taking screenshots or screen recordings of photos and videos sent with View Once or Allow Replay. It also stopped those messages from opening on Instagram's desktop site. The change was part of a push against sextortion aimed at teens.
Social Media Today covered the December 2024 rollout, including the in-app alert that tells the receiver prevention is active. In practice, the receiver gets a blank capture and a message saying the app does not allow it.
Instagram's help page for the sender still describes a dotted circle next to the media if it "detects someone took a screenshot," so the old alert text has not been scrubbed from the docs. Treat the block as the main behavior and the circle as the fallback.
Blocking has limits. A person can still point a second phone at the screen. Send View Once media only to people you would trust with a photo anyway.
Vanish Mode
Vanish Mode is a different feature from View Once. You swipe up inside a chat, and messages disappear when either person leaves the thread. Instagram's help page tells users to use it only with people they trust, because someone can screenshot or screen-record before the message goes away. It adds: "You'll receive a notification if we detect they take a screenshot."
You will see that notice inline in the chat. Reports from late 2024 onward also describe screenshots being blocked outright in some Vanish Mode threads, which fits the pattern of staged rollouts. If your chat shows the alert, detection is active. If the capture comes out blank, blocking is.
What you can control on your own Stories
You cannot switch on a screenshot alert for Stories. You can shrink the audience and limit the easy ways a Story travels.
- Close Friends. When you post, tap Close Friends at the bottom instead of Your Story. Instagram's Close Friends page notes that people on the list know they are on it.
- Hide story from. Go to your profile, open the menu, tap Story, live and location, then Hide story and live from, and pick the accounts. Per Instagram's help article, this is different from blocking: the person can still see your profile and posts.
- Private account. A private profile lets only approved followers see your photos and videos, which also shrinks who can capture your Stories in the first place.
- Turn off sharing to messages. In Settings and privacy, open Sharing and remixes (older app versions put it under the Story settings) and switch off Allow sharing to messages. Viewers lose the paper-airplane button. Screenshots still work, but a Story can no longer be forwarded with one tap.
- View Once for sensitive media. In DMs, pick View Once rather than Keep in chat when you send something private, since that is the format with in-app capture blocking.
Anything you post to a large public audience can be captured. If a Story contains an address, a ticket QR code, a child's school or a client document, leave it out. Instagram's settings cannot make a public Story un-screenshottable.
Screenshot detector apps
Several third-party apps and sites say they can show you who screenshotted your Stories. Instagram's Help Center documents no such feature for Stories, and the viewer list shows views only. An app that claims otherwise is guessing, and one that asks for your Instagram password is a bigger problem than any screenshot.
If you run a brand account
Brands usually have the reverse worry: they want Stories to be saved, shared and screenshotted. Story ad creative that travels, like a clear offer or a recognizable product shot, tends to get captured on purpose.
